What the starting price covers
Our repairs and rebuilds start at £2495.00. That figure is a genuine starting point rather than a headline number designed to get you on the phone. It reflects a straightforward rebuild on a four cylinder engine where the damage is contained and the block and crankshaft can be reused after machining. It includes the removal of the engine, the strip down, the cleaning and measuring, the OEM parts needed for a standard rebuild, the reassembly, the refit and the road test.
Prices move above that figure when the failure has been left to develop. A wet belt that shed its material months ago will have pushed debris through the entire oil system, so the pump, the cooler, the turbo and the galleries all need attention. A timing chain that jumped will often have bent valves and marked pistons. We cannot know the full picture until the engine is apart, which is exactly why we quote in two stages rather than guessing.
How our quoting works
The first stage is an indicative price based on the vehicle, the engine code, the mileage and the symptoms. For most of the engines we specialise in we can be very close at this point, because we have seen the same failure hundreds of times. The second stage is the confirmed price after the strip down, supported by photographs and measurements. If the confirmed price is higher than the indicative one we explain precisely what changed and you decide how to proceed.
There are no diagnostic charges hidden in the small print and no storage fees while you think it over. If you decide not to go ahead after the strip down we will tell you what your options are, including selling the vehicle as it stands.

What affects the final figure
Four things move the price. The first is the extent of the internal damage. The second is whether the cylinder head can be saved or has to be replaced. The third is the turbo, because a turbo fed with dirty oil rarely survives and fitting a rebuilt engine behind a damaged turbo is false economy. The fourth is the ancillary work that becomes sensible while the engine is out, such as a clutch on a high mileage manual or a cambelt on the driven side.
Collection and delivery is included on most jobs within our coverage of the South, the Midlands and the North. For vehicles further afield we will quote the transport honestly and separately so you can see it.
Value against a replacement engine
A used engine can look cheaper on paper until you add the labour twice. If a second hand unit arrives with a worn chain or a tired oil pump you pay to fit it, you pay to remove it and you pay again for the next one. Our page on repair versus a used engine sets out the real numbers. For most owners a rebuilt engine with known parts and a known history is the cheaper route within twelve months.
