What a reconditioned engine is
A reconditioned engine is a used engine that has been completely stripped, cleaned, measured and rebuilt with new wearing parts. Every component is checked against the manufacturer tolerances, and anything outside those tolerances is reconditioned or replaced. The oil system is flushed, the cylinder head is pressure tested, and the unit is reassembled with OEM gaskets, bearings and seals. The result is an engine whose internal condition you can rely on, unlike a second hand unit sold as it left the donor vehicle.
We supply and fit reconditioned engines for the car and van families that fail most often on UK roads, including Jaguar and Land Rover Ingenium diesels, Ford EcoBoost and EcoBlue units, and Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall PureTech engines. See the full list on our engine repair by vehicle page.
Reconditioned engine versus used engine
The appeal of a used engine is the lower headline price. The problem is that you know nothing about its history. It may have done high mileage, been run low on oil, or already be developing the same fault that failed your original engine. When a used engine fails, you pay the fitting labour all over again. A reconditioned engine costs more up front but removes that gamble, because the internals have been verified and the unit carries a warranty. Frequently asked questions
What is a reconditioned engine?
A reconditioned engine is a used unit that has been stripped, cleaned, measured and rebuilt with new wearing parts to a known standard. Unlike a second hand engine, its internal condition has been verified and it carries a warranty.
Is a reconditioned engine better than a used engine?
Yes. A used engine is sold as it left the donor vehicle, with unknown mileage and history. A reconditioned engine has been inspected and rebuilt, so you know the bearings, gaskets and oil system are sound.
